Fortunate Families serves as a resource and networking ministry with Catholic parents of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender children. We hold fast to the truth that our children are, in the words of the United States bishops, “child[ren] of God, gifted and called for a purpose in God’s design.” (Always our Children 1997-1998)

Fortunate Families knows the importance of our stories and the need to share them. Parent Gatherings offer parents and family members of LGBT individuals a safe place to share their stories and their faith.

A generous grant from the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation allows Fortunate Families to provide the attendees at these Parent Gatherings with printed resource materials, speakers, facilitators and a shared meal, all at no cost to those attending.

These gatherings begin with prayer. Speakers then offer presentations and lead the group in discussions. These discussions offer parents and other family members a chance to share their faith journeys and the struggles they and their families encounter. For many, these events offer attendees their first chance to speak about their LGBT children or family members in a Catholic context. Attendees also hear from others who have been on their journey for many years and learn that their struggles, feelings and concerns are not unique. They hear how others are dealing with these issues and are encouraged by what they hear and the relationships they make. A shared meal and prayer bring the gathering to an end.

For many, these Parent Gatherings provide a catalyst for future meetings. For these, Fortunate Families offers resources to help form and launch these new ministries.

Our office staff and board would be happy to work with volunteers to set up a Parent Gaterhing in your area. For information on what is involved with setting up a Parent Gatherings, download this document: Steps for Planning a Parent Gathering.
