“This movement [seeking justice for LGBT people] has, to some extent, been stuck in the coming-out phase. It must become more celebratory of the gifts of our LGBT loved ones, and more politically active in both Church and society.” [parent respondent]

Use the links to the left to view, download, and/or print the Executive Summary or Report on the survey of Catholic Parents with lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) daughters and sons conducted during the summer 2006. The report has been mailed to all United States bishops with the cover letter listed to the left. The report is 1.6 megabytes and the appendix is 5.6 megabytes. Depending on your browser, it may take some time to download. Please be patient.

These documents are in Adobe Acrobat files (pdf) and require the free Adobe Reader. Click to download the latest version.

Survey results testify to the love of Catholic parents for their LGBT children and show how they become more comfortable and supportive as they share their stories with family, friends, other parents and the wider community. The report documents the positive growth of parents over time, and their willingness to work for greater acceptance, especially in the Church.

We hope the report inspires further efforts of your own. Share the findings of this survey with others, especially those in your faith community, including your pastor, and those in faith formation, education, and social justice ministries. Consider sending a note to your bishop, highlighting a key point in the report. And never stop telling your story. That is the greatest witness you can make, attesting to God’s love working in our LGBT children.

Please do whatever you are able to help the whole Church take to heart the reality expressed so beautifully in Always Our Children, that our LGBT loved ones are “gifted and called for a purpose in God’s design.”

With prayers for our journey together in Christ,

Casey Lopata
Director, Parents Voice Project

NOTES:

We gratefully acknowledge the financial assistance of the Wheaton (IL) Franciscan Sisters, and of Mary’s Pence.

The summary report was sent to all active diocesan U.S. Bishops, parents who submitted a survey, donors to Fortunate Families, and selected others.
